Mark Applebaum has never been one to shy away from making connections, even odd ones. In his latest assemblage, Speed Dating , five smartly absurd works three of which deal with history in some wry fashion are presented for your kind consideration if not downright bemusement. The album opens with a tip of the hat to pioneering soundpoet Charles Amirkhanian, who, in , famously made a rhythmic tape piece Just out of the words rainbow, chug, bandit and bomb deliciously articulated by Nicholas Slonimsky.
Biting socio-political commentary has rarely been more foot-tapping. Applebaum reached into his home storage space and fired up eight classic analog synths from the 80s that had been lying there. Skeletons in the Closet uses a randomizing digital Max patch to operate on these dusty treasures, no doubt frustrating purists while delightfully mangling the past. Speed Dating , another octet, this time for acoustic instruments in fact the Stony Brook Contemporary Chamber Players, led by Eduardo Leandro is based on coy pairings in strange orgiastic combinations.
Unlike in Shakespeare plays, no marriages result. The Plate of Transition Nourishes the Chameleon Appetite comes roaring back from with Belgium-based violinist Takao Hyakutome deftly navigating the various mercurial and laconic formal options laid out by the composer. The resulting violin mauling is downright virtuosic. Finally, in Clicktrack , a dozen percussionists Southern Oregon University Percussion Ensemble, led by Terry Longshore make a quiet Cageian racket, following precise rhythms in their headphones while the audience hears scratchy noises and fragments of text actually anagrams of Shakespeare sonnets.

And last week, it was with Love on the Spectrum , an Australian reality-show-cum-docuseries that follows a group of single adults on the autism spectrum as they explore the dating world. Love on the Spectrum is built like a typical dating show: We meet the 11 daters, and their friends and families, and follow them in various dating scenarios speed dating, blind dates, etc. Overall, Love on the Spectrum does something that is curiously absent in a genre that is ostensibly about love, which is actually showing it.
Take Ruth and Thomas, who are engaged and recently got married. They have a ton of chemistry, and a supportive, loving, and very sexy relationship, which they talk about openly. This is problematic in a lot of ways, many of which I only realized after reading feedback from a neurodiverse audience. For instance, how all of the dates were strictly between autistic people, and how ridiculous the cutesy music is for a dating show about adults.
Romantic love, yes, but also self-love, familial love, and love between friends and communities. Already a subscriber? Log in or link your magazine subscription. Account Profile. Sign Out.
Book Speed Dating
One of the most powerful things I can do for my students is work to promote reading for fun and helping students find books that they will enjoy. I feel like middle school is one of those key times in life where many students either take the path to become a life-long reader…or not. I always get great feedback from teachers and students with this activity…they love it! By the final round, about half of the students will typically have a book that they want to check out. I did this several weeks ago with my 8th graders, and this week the 6th graders are having their turn.
But it’s one of the few new dating shows with actual love. white person’s experience of love, the reality-dating genre seems to be expanding. and follow them in various dating scenarios (speed dating, blind dates, etc.).
Inspired by the speed dating scene in New York where single people met potential dates over a brief, timed conversation and ranked them, speed dating books is a way for students to quickly put their hands on several books in order to find one of interest. To kick off each semester, my students speed date books. When we arrive in the library, several books are arranged on tables and students find a table and sit with their guided note page. I set the timer for anywhere between two to four minutes depending on the students, and the book dating begins.
Students make notes on first impressions of the cover, the inside jacket blurb, and possibly even the first paragraph or two. The timer buzzes signaling students to move to another table and start the process with another book. We may repeat this process between five and ten times depending on student interest and the time of year. After students have completed the process, they will rank books deciding which book to begin reading immediately and which ones to add to their reading list.
I have experimented with book speed dating several ways.
Oh, this lesson is awesome! Because of the nature of the class, the students do not tend to be readers, nor are they generally intrinsically-motivated to read. They really enjoyed the lesson, and my eighth grade library assistants, who saw the speed dating as they worked in the library, all asked me to do this with their classes, too. The best part?
The classes I did this with were excellent at reading quietly, even though many of them are struggling readers! Prep : Decide how you want the tables set up.

Each table was a different genre. For the reading resource classes, I chose high-interest genres such as horror, humor, manga, nonfiction, survival, romance.
By framing a dating sim around speed dating, each encounter becomes a vignette that allows a taste of the world without relying too heavily on exposition, and gives snapshots of the ghosts in a way that makes each feel special. Speed Dating for Ghosts is a visual novel about exactly what it sounds like. There, you choose a room and chat with the ghosts who are also attending for two rounds, then you pick who you want to go on a date with.
Instead, I was able to enjoy my time chatting with everyone, even if I had already spoken to a given ghost in a room. And staying true to the setting, the rounds are relatively short and digestible. I never found myself feeling bored or trying to rush through dialogue to get to whatever was next. The same goes for the ghosts. Because you only get one date with each, their stories become that much more interesting and unique.
Each table has one genre on it with enough books to match the number of seats more if possible. You can Label the tables with these Genre Signs. Blog post about this activity on Mrs.
